History of Block Panchayat

Regarding the historical name of Chalakudy, two main perspectives exist among historians. The authoritative text Jyotisha Samhita records it as 'Shaladhwajam' (Shalakkodi). In ancient times, numerous sacrificial rituals (yagas) were performed on the banks of the present-day Chalakudy River. According to legend, the pillar to which sacrificial animals were tied was known as a yupam. This yupam served as the flagstaff (dhwajam) of the sacrificial hall (yagashala). Because the yagashala was accorded great majesty, importance, and sanctity, the surrounding region came to be called Shalakkodi. This is also recorded on the bell of the local, ancient Christian church, the Forane Church. The term Shalakkodi likely evolved gradually over time into Chalakudy.
